Set The Mood!
When you are meeting with your manager at your law firm trying to get a raise, be mindful of the mood of the meeting. In other words, set the proper tone. Be positive. Be upbeat. Have fun. Remember that your manager is not an enemy, he/she is your ally.

By using the proper tone of voice, body language, and language, you can do wonders for the mood of the meeting if you leave all the negative junk outside.

Here are some negative things to leave behind, things that are sure deal killers:

  • Defensiveness
  • Sarcasm
  • Anger
  • Moodiness
  • Irritation
  • Desperation
There is power in your mood. You have the ability to sway the meeting one way or another depending on the vibe that you give out. At some time during the meeting, be sure to let your boss know that you intend to work with them not against them in the raise-request process. No matter what happens as the meeting proceeds, be grateful and say thanks to your boss for working with you.
