Court reporter opposes AB 1293

The Honorable Joseph Dunn
Capitol, Room 2080
Sacramento CA 95814

Dear Senator Dunn:
I am a licensed court reporter and agency owner in California who is opposed to AB 1293. AB 1293 places an undue burden on my agency and our court reporters to comply by allowing any party at a deposition to deny my ability to email transcripts.

Not only is this bad for business, but it is bad for the expediency of the entire discovery process. AB 1293 is not a step in the right direction. It unduly restricts my ability to offer timely services (emailing transcripts) and places the control of my product in the hands of any attorney who appeared at the depo.

A real world example: Attorney Smith can restrict Attorney Jones from receiving a daily transcript simply by refusing to allow me the court reporter to utilize e-mail in delivering a transcript.

Thank you for reading my letter and I would urge you to vote NO on AB 1293 as a bill that blocks the streamlining of the discovery process.

Sincerely,

Todd Olivas, CSR 12237
